He had a dream in which he saw a stairway resting on the earth, with its top reaching to heaven, and the angels of God were ascending and descending on it (Gn 28:12). He lay for the night, in a certain place, spent and on the run. With a rock for his pillow, at the gate of heaven, he named the place Bethel, the house of God. In a dream, he saw a way open up between heaven and earth. The way could only be seen in a dream. He could only go so far as a closed gate. But God allow
